Location On our single-site campus you will be just a ten-minute walk from the City Centre of Leeds. Sport and fitness The University has three sporting venues and, if students are staying in University accommodation, they get free basic membership for The Edge, our indoor sports facility, which has a 250-station fitness suite, a 25m swimming pool, sauna and steam room and more than 70 classes per week. Leeds University Union The award-winning Leeds University Union (LUU) gives you access to over 300 activities, clubs and societies so you can try something new or continue an existing interest. You will have the opportunity find what is right for you through the Union’s ‘give-it-a-go’ sessions. There is also a student advice centre, plus shops, bars and clubs.

Leeds the city Leeds is in Yorkshire, Northern England – a lively, multicultural city in the middle of Great Britain. It is one of the largest financial and business services centres in the UK outside London, and a centre for culture and entertainment, with world-class art collections, several theatres and museums, and many bars and restaurants. The city is one of the UK’s top shopping destinations and boasts over two miles of traffic-free shopping and beautiful Victorian and Edwardian arcades, with shops of every kind. Leeds has a vibrant nightlife, with clubs and bars offering music for all tastes. There are lots of live music venues, including the University’s students’ union. With over 60,000 students, Leeds is one of the UK’s most exciting cities. Its comparative affordability and student-friendly atmosphere make it an ideal place to live and learn for a semester or a year. Its central location makes Leeds a perfect starting point for trips to London, Manchester or Edinburgh, all within three hours on the train. The city is well connected to the rest of the UK by affordable and extensive coach and rail services. Leeds Bradford Airport is only 30 minutes away from the University and provides regular flights to cities across Europe. A flight to Paris or Amsterdam takes only 90 minutes. Countryside Leeds is one of the UK’s greenest cities, with more than 4,000 hectares of green space. You will find many areas of natural beauty and interest around the city, such as Roundhay Park, Temple Newsam, Harewood House and Kirkstall Abbey. The Yorkshire Dales, Peak District and Lake District national parks are all within easy reach of Leeds. Historic locations like York, Harrogate, Haworth and Scarborough are just a day trip away.

How do you receive international students?

Through the study abroad and exchange programmes students are able to spend one or two semesters studying at the University of Leeds, and can transfer the credits earned back to their home universities. All exchange and study abroad students are taught with home and international students who are taking a full degree programme. There are a wide variety of modules (courses) available across seven faculties and there are pre-sessional and in-sessional English courses to help students develop their English language skills. Leeds International Summer School offers students the opportunity to study at the University of Leeds and immerse themselves in British culture as part of an exciting two or four week programme each July. Taking advantage of the vibrant, student-friendly city of Leeds, and the history, culture and natural beauty of the area, the summer school combines world-class tuition with local knowledge, academic-related field trips, and a wide variety of social activities. Before they arrive, students will receive information about the buddy group and their orientation programme, which includes compulsory welcome talks and social events. Students can also talk to current students about their experiences and to ask questions about what it’s like to study in Leeds through our Link to Leeds Ambassador Scheme.

The Study Abroad Office presents an Orientation session which covers the following topics: Support services at Leeds (where to find help); the role of the Study Abroad Office; Modules; Exams; Transcripts; Immigration; Being part of a Global Community; Opportunities to get involved; an entertaining comedy skit / drama about culture shock. Students are also required to attend a Parent School Welcome Meeting. This meeting covers information relating to academic study at Leeds: timetables, assessment, grading system, academic integrity, personal tutor information, School Coordinator information. We also run Campus Discovery sessions. In small groups students explore campus by following an app on their phone which guides them around essential locations, tests their knowledge and gives them useful information. Campus Discovery is the perfect way to explore the University of Leeds campus and meet new people. The International Welcome Team put on an extensive range of welcome events aimed at new International students and UK students from across the University. The Study Abroad Office holds events for Study Abroad students midway through their exchange at Leeds to ensure they are settled in and supported. The Global Community team organise events and activities which enable our study abroad students to make the most of their time in Leeds and the UK. This varied programme runs throughout the year, with special trips and events organised within and out of term time. Independent of the University, the students’ union (Leeds University Union) represents the student community. The students’ union building is at the centre of campus, with a range of facilities and services for students, including Student Advice. LUU runs over 300 student-led clubs and societies, offering students leadership responsibilities and the chance to meet people who share their interests. 

Accommodation and cost of living

University of Leeds accommodation is guaranteed to all new international students who apply by the application deadline (1st July for September starters and 1st December for January starters). There is a wide range of accommodation available, including on- and off-campus, catered and self-catered and en suite or standard. Accommodation fees: We send students instructions about how to apply for their accommodation in their acceptance email. Student receive their accommodation contract offers during August if they are starting in September for Semester 1 or during January if they are starting in Semester 2. There are no tuition fees to pay for incoming exchange students who have been nominated by our partner universities. Cost of living (e.g. cost of food etc): Scholarship or fee information

Facilitation at university 

The Disability Services team helps students with physical disabilities, learning difficulties or mental health conditions throughout their time at Leeds. Our expert team will work with students before their arrival to make any necessary arrangements to support their time at Leeds. The Student Counselling and Wellbeing Service provides free professional and confidential counselling, wellbeing and mental health support through one-to-one appointments, workshops, groups and web-based self-help. The International Student Office can offer advice about immigration and living in the UK and travelling with family.
