In recent decades, there has been an increasing focus on good corporate governance and the role and interaction between boards and board members, owners, and the CEO and management.

This applies to both public and private organisations. Corporate governance focuses on the development of guidelines for owners, the board of directors and management to both develop and manage the organisation's resources in an appropriate manner.

Increasingly, demands are being placed on organisations, both private and public. Regulations and guidelines, both national and international, provide guidance on how organisations should be managed.

In Norway, the introduction of key principles for corporate governance (NUES), gender regulation in the Norwegian Public Limited Companies Act and an increasing focus on sustainability have been important factors that have influenced organisations, how they are governed and how their resources are managed.
