Rajani from Kathmandu University in Nepal

Greetings from beautiful Porsgrunn:

Greetings from beautiful Porsgrunn. My name is Rajani Neupane, currently studying at campus Porsgrunn. Nepal is rich in natural beauty and so is Norway. The natural beauty and peaceful environment have made me feel like I am still in my home country. I have not only made Norwegian friends here but also made friends from France, Portugal, Ukraine, Bangladesh, Sri-Lanka etc. I am excited to share my experience staying in Norway through this article. Happy Reading.

My name is Rajani, a master's student pursuing M. tech in environmental engineering in the Kathmandu University Currently, I am master exchange student in engineering working on my thesis at University of Southeastern Norway. Initially, I hesitated about my decision to conduct my master's thesis in Norway, having only heard about it's extreme cold climate. However, after coming here in August, I can say that I have experienced both sides i.e., summer and winter season of Norway and I must admit that it is beautiful in summer and even more beautiful in winter when it is covered with snow. I can confidently say that Norway has exceeded my expectations.

Upon my arrival in August, the warm reception and support from both USN staff and senior students immediately put my doubts to rest. The vibrant international orientation week facilitated connections with fellow students from diverse countries and professors, making me feel at home despite being far from Nepal. A city tour, informative senior students, and the efficient international office streamlined our integration into the local community, including obtaining the essential D-number.

We had a weekly socialize event called coffee-hour for socializing, playing games and drinking coffee. My time at the university has been an incredible adventure. From exploring biogas on a sustainable bus to crafting delicious dishes at International Food Day, every moment has been a vibrant learning experience. Amidst the excitement, my master's thesis work has become a fulfilling pursuit, driving my passion further. The mandatory Safety Information and Practical First Aid training provided essential skills, ensuring a secure academic environment. USN not only expanded my knowledge but also enriched my life with diverse experiences and lasting friendships. I am grateful for the simplicity and warmth of this journey, leaving me with cherished memories and newfound wisdom.

I choose to reside in SSN housing (Jotunveien). It has been a fantastic experience. The proximity to grocery stores, fire extinguisher training, quiz competitions, and inclusive events like Christmas Eve dinner parties have made it feel like a home away from home. The SSN housing team, especially Hans, has been exceptionally supportive.
Housing rent, groceries are economic compared to the transportation charges in Norway.

Living in Porsgrunn has been a joy, with its peaceful and clean environment, downtown amenities, and cultural attractions. Embracing the cultural differences between Nepal and Norway has been an opportunity for celebration, particularly during festive seasons.
Norwegian are very kind and good people, I couldn't understand and speak Norwegian language however, they always helped and spoken in English with me. I never felt alone here during my stay in Norway because of their love and care.

Beyond my academic pursuits, I have had the chance to explore other European cities like Paris, Italy, and Amsterdam. One highlight was participating in a ski trip organized by the University to Hafjell, Norway, where I learned to ski for the first time. It was an exhilarating experience, rounding off my overall awesome stay in Norway.

In conclusion, I am immensely grateful for the opportunities, experiences, and friendships that the University of Southeastern Norway has bestowed upon me. Norway's natural beauty, coupled with the kindness of its people, has made this chapter of my life truly unforgettable. Happy reading, and may you find inspiration in my journey.
