Checklist for new students

Find out about the most important tasks you need to take care of before your student life at USN can begin.

Before departure

1. Admission

Make sure that you have received your official admission letter from USN. This applies to all international students. And if you are a student from outside the EU/EEA area, you will need the letter stating your admission at USN, to provide for your application to the UDI for a student permit in Norway.

2. Accept your offer

Exchange students: Students who have received their Letter of Admission are automatically accepted for studying at USN Norway the upcoming semester.
If you do not intend to come - please notify us by e-mail international@usn.no.

Degree students: accept your offer as described in your admission letter.

3. Apply for housing

All international students who would like to stay in SSN student dormitories must apply for student housing directly with SSN. Please note that this is a separate process from the student application process. International students should submit their applications through SSN within April 15th for the autumn semester and October 15th for the spring semester.

The SSN - student welfare services - has only a limited number of apartments in  accommodated for spouses or small families (1-2-rooms). These are in high demand. Please contact the SSN directly for more questions. If you are coming with a family or spouses, it is your own responsibility to find suitable accommodation.

Please note that there are also private housing providers off campus, where it is possible to rent a room or a small apartment. Check out airbnb.com, hybel.no or Finn.no for private housing.

4. Prepare for departure
  • Check your arrival guide
  • Book your ticket. Make sure to arrive on campus well ahead of Orientation week. Keep in mind that you might need to stay at a quarantine hotel for 10 days prior to moving into your housing.
  • Return your housing contract to SSN as soon as you have received it, according to their rules and routines
  • If you are a student coming from outside EU/EEA: Apply for your visa well in advance of your departure. Count on at least 2 months processing time.
  • Are you coming from outside EU/EEA and need a deposit account for your visa application - to show the documentation of subsistence? See information from the Student Welfare services here.
5. Get insurance

After your arrival at USN

Here are 6 important steps you have to do in order get started as a student:

1. Attend the orientation webinar August 9th 14:00 (CET)

This webinar is in addition to the webinar "Online Orientation by International Office" offered in June. There will be practical information sessions about being a student at USN and also information about the police visits. The orientation is online and is available on the facebook page for new students.

2. Register and activate your student account

In order to secure your study space, you must register online by as soon as possible. Here's how:

  • The semester registration opens on August 1st for the autumn semester. You will receive an email from us with information on how to activate your user account.
  • After the activation, you must confirm your education plan in Studentweb.

To access the USN online services, you need to activate your student account and upload a photo for your student card. Note: Before you can active your student account, you need to have your temporary 11-digit number ready. You will receive your temporary 11-digit number by mail.

3.  First day attendance registration

Not all applicants will need to register attendance. You only need to do this if you are an EU/EEA applicant. New students on the online-based master's degrees in engineering and technology, and students on industry master programmes, also do not need to register attendance.

If you do need to register attendance, you will receive a text message on your first day to the mobile phone number you've registered in your application. The text message contains a link that you'll need to access to register a code, which will be read aloud in your first lecture. You have until 5PM to register the code, but we recommend that you do so as soon as you're able.

If you have received a text message with a link, you need to register attendance. If you do not confirm your intent to study by the specified deadline, you will lose your admission offer and your place will be awarded to another qualified applicant.

4. Pay the semester fee*

You will find the amount, account number and KID number in Student Web. By doing this you will be registered for the semester.
*Exchange students usually do not pay a semester fee, as you normally pay the fees to your home institution.

5. Get your student card

The student card provides access to buildings and to borrow books at the student library. Take a photo for your student card, either at the designated place on campus, or upload your own photo. Download your student ID or get a semester sticker for your student card at the student service center on campus. Pick up your card in the service center at your campus.
